My little story of business resiliency - Part 4
Oct 27, 2023The veto and the decision
The weekend's coming up. I choose the best time. She seems in a good mood; it's my time.
I tell her the happy news of the Student Painter's offer. No congratulations! She laughs and doesn't take this project seriously:
"An organization doesn't give a franchise to a 16-year-old," she says disgustingly.
“Will you need a car? You can just take your bicycle then. Will you be hiring people? Why don’t you start by painting by yourself? Heck, you don't even know how to paint!" she exclaims with an exasperated voice.
“Besides, you can't even close the kitchen cupboard doors; imagine running a business! What nonsense! Stop bothering me with your fabulous theories. You are as bad as your father. I knew you'd end up like him: all empty promises and nothing to show for.”
My mother condemns the whole operation.
“It's out of the question,” she continues. “Forget running a Student Painter's business next summer; you'll never be able to get a car, especially not at 16. You're too young. You're just like your father, a dreamer who has never achieved anything. Anyway, you're a minor, and legally, it's impossible. End of discussion...”
Torn between my role as an obedient son and my entrepreneurial passion, I ignore my mother's objections and refuse to believe her dire predictions. On Monday morning, doing as I please, I call John and confirm that I gladly accept his offer. “John, I will take on the franchise this summer!”
Will I still get the maternal support this summer in the face of a fait accompli?
